Laramie County Firefighter Killed in Accident

A Laramie County firefighter was recently killed in an off-duty car crash Thursday afternoon around 3:40 p.m. The tragic incident occurred on Interstate 80 near mile marker 342 west of Cheyenne.

The firefighter was driving westbound on I-80 in a 2006 Kia SUV when he merged from the left lane, across the right and into the merging lane. When the firefighter crossed into the merging lane, he immediately struck the back of a 2016 international commercial vehicle.

Laramie County firefighter John L. Kennedy, 22, of Cheyenne, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. The other driver has been identified as Joseph Philip, 48, of Ontario, Canada. He did not suffer any injuries from the accident.

According to a Wyoming Highway Patrol news release, both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The Laramie County firefighter may have been using his phone and speeding when the crash occurred. Both are possible contributing factors that are currently being investigated by Wyoming officials.

Sadly, Kennedy is the 134th person to pass away on Wyoming roadways in just 2019.
